"D&RGW - Fourth Division"

Photos by Chuck Graham

The D&RGW Fourth Division was part of the narrow gauge empire in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. The line extended from Alamosa, Colorado, westward to the mines of the San Juans, around Durango and Silverton.

The 13’ x 13’ layout, begun in the 1980’s, depicts standard gauge eastward from Alamosa, and narrow gauge westward to Chama (NM) and beyond. The upper level is a loop-to-loop narrow gauge line which features Chama, Cumbres Pass, and a freelanced Toltec Mining District. Narrow gauge operation features Soundtraxx analog locomotive sound, occasional doubleheaders up to Cumbres Pass, and a card-and-waybill system. The scenery on the upper level is 75% complete, and many of the structures are scratchbuilt.

The lower level represents the 1950’s-1960’s-era standard gauge branch that interchanged with the narrow gauge at a dual gauge yard and engine facilities at Alamosa. Scenery on the lower level is in progress. A 4-1/2 turn narrow gauge helix connects the upper and lower levels.
