"Colorado Midland"

Photos by Hal Shafer

The rail road is the Colorado Midland, which only missed being a narrow gauge by a mere 1'-8-1/2". Otherwise, it has sharp turns, steep grades, short cars, small locos, and ran on a shoestring, most of the time. How much closer to being a narrow gauge line could you get?

Layout is 7'-6-3/8" wide by 19'-6-3/4" long. Used airplane wing modular benchwork, as designed by Bob Hyman, (Sn3 Nut). Track is ME code 70, with Central Valley turnout kits, highly modified. Yard Tracks are on 1/2" plywood and Homabed. Main line tracks are on spline roadbed topped with Homabed. Minimum mainline radius is 30". Maximum grade is 4.125 % Minimum turnout is #5. Track Plan by Roger Duffield (Boss Hogg). Room Design by John Waite (Mexican John). Bridge and Building Supt. Bindle Jim Besleme. Photographic Documentation by Cpn Hal Shaffer, (Ret) French Foreign Legion. Overall concept is by Hook or Crook.

The layout is a loose approximation of the line from Leadville to Basalt, with the town of Thomasville in the middle. Mining and logging are featured industries, with facilities for servicing locos, miners and loggers, as well.

Engines are a mix of Hallmark and MEW Brass plus an assortment of Bachman ten wheelers and consolidations. You gotta have Shays, Heislers and Climax's for logging and mining.

All will be on DCC, and as many as possible will have sound. There is also a passenger train that will surprise many folks.

Operation is designed to be fun, rather than strict adherence to a clock or time table.
