"Colorado Western and Aspen Junction Railroads"

Photos by Bob Lenz

The standard gauge Colorado Western runs from Leadville through Hellgate past Thomasville, where the logging branch heads uphill via switchbacks, and on to Basalt. At Basalt’s dual gauge yard it interchanges with the narrow gauge Aspen Junction. The mining line climbs from Basalt (48”) through a series of switchbacks, as it serves the mining district, and ends at its highest elevation (74”). The layout occupies a 20’ x 40’ room with tunnels, bridges, trestles, lots of rockwork, and scenery from floor to ceiling. Night operation is simulated with black light which displays the illuminated town to its fullest. Take in the sound and visual affects, tons of detail, many trestles, backdrops by Greg Gray and power by Digitrax.
