"Hy-Sioux Southern Railroad"
Photos by Tom Mallien II
The Hy-Sioux Southern Railroad is a HO scale layout featuring a 36' x 11' dog bone shaped, double-track main line that represents a 1950's era steam prototype railroad operating in the Smoky Mountain areas of Tennessee and the Carolinas.
The Smoky Mountain Power Plant was kit-bashed using “coal” from the black sand beaches of Hawaii. Coal, industrial products and lumber are among the main commodities hauled by the railroad.
The layout features a scratch built Union Station, seven bridges, a trestle and heavy industrial areas of manufacturing and extensive coal mining. The slag on the hills is from a mining area outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The scenery is virtually 100% complete while the electrical is about 80% finished.
There are working 3 color signal systems. The operating system is D.C.C. with Digitrax Radio Empire Builder and Sound Traxx decoders.
The background painting is by St. Louis artist and modeler, Greg Gray.
